The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly expected to sign veteran running back Ronald Jones on a one-year contract this offseason, per NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero.
Superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes seems to approve of this move. In response to these reports, the 26-year-old signal caller reacted with three flex emojis.
Jones, 24, played the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His strongest career season came in 2020 when he logged 978 yards and seven touchdowns as the team’s lead back.
In 2021, he took a back seat to starting running back Leonard Fournette — collecting 428 yards and four touchdowns through 16 games.
Jones just finished the final season of his four-year, rookie contract with the Bucs organization. He was selected with the 38th overall pick in the 2018 draft.
With injuries to starting running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, the Chiefs’ lack of depth at the running back position was exposed throughout the 2021 season.
Adding a proven backup like Jones will give the Kansas City offense some much-need cushion in the backfield.
